Setting Up a New Router? Get the Order Right
Replacing an old router can disconnect every device if the internet-provider handoff, Wi-Fi name, and security settings are not planned first.
Quick answer
Before unplugging the old router, photograph the cable connections and write down the current Wi-Fi name and password. Confirm whether your provider supplied a modem/router combination and whether a separate router is supported.
Try these checks in order
Identify the modem, gateway, and router
A provider gateway may already combine the modem and Wi-Fi router. Adding a second router without the right mode can create double-network problems. Record the model numbers first.
Save the current network details
Write down the Wi-Fi name, password, provider login, and any devices that need special setup. Do not post this information or send passwords through the appointment form.
Photograph every cable
Take clear pictures showing which cable goes to the internet or WAN port, which goes to the provider device, and which connect to computers, switches, or smart-home hubs.
Power devices in the right order
With cables connected according to the official manual, power the provider modem or gateway first and wait for its normal online lights. Then power the new router and complete its official setup process.
Use strong, compatible security
Use WPA2 or WPA3 as supported, a unique administrator password, and a strong Wi-Fi password. Change default administrator credentials and install firmware updates through the router's official app or settings page.
Reconnect and test important devices
Test phones and computers first, then printers, TVs, cameras, speakers, and work devices. A guest network may be useful, but some devices need to share the main network to communicate.
Stop troubleshooting and get the right help if:
- You cannot tell whether the provider box is a modem, gateway, or router.
- The home has security cameras, work equipment, medical devices, or smart-home hubs that cannot tolerate an unplanned outage.
- The provider requires account activation or settings you do not have.
