Computer Running Slow? Check These Things Before Buying a New One
A slow Windows PC or Mac may need free space, updates, fewer startup apps, or a hardware check. Start with low-risk steps and avoid “cleaner” pop-ups.
Quick answer
Restart the computer, check how much storage is free, and note whether it is slow everywhere or only in one app. Do not install a cleaner, driver updater, or antivirus offered by a pop-up.
Try these checks in order
Restart, not just sleep
Save your work and choose Restart from the system menu. A full restart clears stuck background processes that sleep mode keeps alive.
Check free storage
Open the built-in Storage settings. A nearly full drive can slow updates and everyday work. Remove files only when you recognize them, and empty the recycle bin or trash after confirming.
Notice where the slowdown occurs
If only one browser or app is slow, update or troubleshoot that app first. If the whole computer is slow from startup, check startup apps, storage, updates, and hardware health.
Install operating-system updates
Use Windows Update or macOS Software Update. Restart afterward. Avoid third-party driver updater websites and unsolicited support tools.
Reduce unnecessary startup apps
Use the built-in Startup Apps or Login Items settings. Disable apps you recognize and do not need immediately; do not remove security, backup, accessibility, or hardware-control tools without understanding them.
Back up before deeper work
If the computer freezes, crashes, clicks, or has important files with no backup, protect the data before repairs, resets, or drive tests.
Stop troubleshooting and get the right help if:
- The computer clicks, smells hot, has a swollen battery, shuts off suddenly, or shows liquid damage.
- Important files are not backed up and the drive may be failing.
- A pop-up says the computer is infected and tells you to call a number or grant remote access.
